Free and open source. Every feature, every surface.

Mark up the work.
Keep your notes. Pay nobody rent.

Red Pen is a developer review-notes layer. Pin typed notes to any element, on any page, then work through them from one shared repository. On WordPress, any Node app, any website, Blender, and Ableton Live.

Five surfaces

One tool, everywhere you build

The same overlay and the same notes model across five surfaces. Learn it once.

WordPress

The plugin

A logged-in Dev Mode overlay on the front end plus a full notes repository in wp-admin. Drop it on any site.

Node

Express middleware

One line, app.use(redPen()), injects the overlay and a tiny notes API. Notes persist to a local file you can commit.

Any site

Drop-in script

A single script tag for static sites, SPAs, anything. Nothing to host and nothing to compile. Notes live in the browser; export to JSON.

Blender

The add-on

A bpy add-on for the 3D viewport. Pin notes to your scene while you model, then pull them into the Hub with everything else.

Ableton Live

Live extension Awaiting SDK release

Leave notes on clips, tracks, and arrangement positions while you produce. Feature-complete. It ships when the Live Extensions SDK goes public.

The Hub

Red Pen Hub

Every surface feeds one local board, so the notes from all your projects sit on a single screen. It runs on your own machine and takes as many projects as you point it at.

Free wherever it ships

Leave a note on anything

Everything below is free, and none of it asks you to make an account. The surfaces are at different maturity levels, so a feature that exists on one has not always reached the rest: the surface matrix lists which surface has what today.

Pin to any element

Click an element to anchor a note to it. Numbered markers follow the page, and Locate scrolls the element to centre and outlines it for about three seconds.

Typed notes + custom types

Note, idea, problem and question on all five surfaces. Custom types with their own colour are on WordPress and the drop-in script; in Ableton, typing !, ? or * sets the type as you go.

Screenshots

Drag a box around any area, scribble on the capture freehand, and it rides along with the note. No more "see the thing near the header". On WordPress today, plus viewport snapshots saved beside the .blend in Blender.

Workflow

Open, In Progress, Resolved, with a priority and a reply thread on every note. All three states now ship on every surface.

Shared repository

Every note across every page in one place, with filters and bulk actions. The stores are a WordPress custom post type, an append-only .redpen/notes.jsonl you can commit, a JSON sidecar next to the .blend, or your browser's localStorage. Nothing is in a format only we can read.

Agent handoff

Assign a note to an AI coding agent and WordPress writes it a JSON brief on disk, in the deny-protected uploads folder with a per-site secret in the filename. Your agent reads that file locally. No API keys, nothing uploaded. On WordPress today.

Dark mode

The whole overlay, the repository, everywhere. Plus a resizable panel and a custom pin colour.

Stays local

Your notes live in your site's database, a file in your repo, or your browser. The only network feature in the whole family is the Hub, and it talks to your own machine.

Always free

Everything Red Pen ships is free, forever, on every surface that has it. There is no upgrade button anywhere in the product. Where the matrix shows a gap, that is work I have not finished rather than a price.

Live

This page is running Red Pen

See the red button in the bottom-right? That is Red Pen, live, on its own marketing page. Open it, pin a note to anything here, and you have just used the product. You have also left us feedback with it.

Go on. Pin one. It only takes a click.

Why this exists

I built this to keep my own notes mine

Client sites in WordPress, Node and Express apps, static pages, scenes in Blender, tracks in Ableton Live: that is my actual working week, and every one of those projects collects the same thing: notes about what to fix and what to ask. Every surface Red Pen runs on exists because I hit that problem in that exact spot, in my own work, and got tired of it.

I like zettelkasten-style systems, but any note system that lives outside the software adds a layer of abstraction and distraction to the note-taking itself. You leave the DAW or the viewport to go write the note, and by the time you get back you have dropped the thread. Red Pen files the note inside the tool where the work is happening, and the gathering-up happens afterward.

The established tools I tried either fell short or wanted a subscription for me to navigate my own work. And the notes themselves (my punch lists, my client feedback, my half-formed ideas) would sit on somebody else's servers, used for who knows what by the company I was paying to hold them.

So Red Pen works the other way around. The same note model on every surface, stored in plain files and databases on my machine, aggregated by a board that runs on localhost. You never make an account, and nothing calls out. Every surface is free in full, and if Red Pen saves you a subscription or a headache, you can back the next release.

Support

Free. All of it. No catch.

Every surface, every feature, unlimited projects. Nothing here has a license key to buy, and no PRO version sits above it. The features the other guys rent out monthly are the ones we give away.

Red Pen has no meter because we do not believe in meters. The subscription crowd charges $39 a month and up for what is on this page (pinned notes, screenshots, the shared board) and shuts it off the day you stop paying. We built the opposite on purpose: it all lives in your own database, and it is yours whether you ever pay us or not.

If it earns a place in your week, back the next release. One-time, any amount, through Buy Me a Coffee or GitHub Sponsors. Backers go on the Supporters wall, and every one of them keeps all five surfaces and the Hub free and maintained. Nothing is held back for the people who pay.

These are giving levels rather than prices. Every tier gets you the same Red Pen, which is all of it. What a tier decides is how your name sits on the Supporters wall. Any amount is welcome; putting your name up is always opt-in.

Sponsors
$10 and up

Your name goes on the Supporters wall.

Inkwell Supporter
$20+

Your name in bold on the wall, linked to wherever you like.

First Ink
$50+

A permanent place in the founding cohort at the top of the wall. This one never rotates.

The difference

Red Pen vs the subscription crowd

The same capabilities, side by side. One bills you every month and locks your notes when you stop; the other is a free download that lives in your own database.

FAQ

Questions

Is it really all free?

Yes, all of it. Every surface, every feature, unlimited projects, and you never make an account or paste a key. No paid tier exists, and no meter is waiting to switch on. If Red Pen earns its keep you can back a release, one-time and any amount, but nothing here is gated behind that.

Is there a subscription or a catch?

Nothing renews, and no license expires when you stop paying. Red Pen is a free download that lives in your own database, so you cannot cancel something you never bought. Support is optional and always one-time.

How can I support the project?

Through Buy Me a Coffee or GitHub Sponsors, both one-time and any amount. Backers go on the Supporters wall if they want to be. That is all I ask, and turning it down costs you nothing.

Does it phone home or track me?

No. Your notes stay in your site, your local file, or your browser. Red Pen has no server component, so nothing is collected and nobody can switch it off. Do not take my word for it: open devtools on this page, watch the Network tab while you use the overlay, and count the outbound requests. The Hub is the one network feature in the family; it binds to loopback and rejects any request arriving with a non-loopback Host header.

Which one do I install?

WordPress sites get the plugin. Node and Express apps get the middleware. Any other website gets the drop-in script. Blender gets the add-on. Ableton Live gets the Live extension, which is feature-complete and waiting on the SDK's public release. Same notes model across all of them.

How do I send feedback about Red Pen?

You are looking at it. This page runs Red Pen. Hit the red button, pin a note, and tell us what you think with the tool itself.
